I saw this movie in theatres when it first came out, Because I love Jake Gyllenhaal and couldn't resist. (yes, i liked him before Brokeback Mountain...Go me!). I didn't really know what to expect, i kind of thought it was just going to be a simple affair but it was so much darker than that. I wouldn't say its a dark comedy, but some parts were a bit dark, yet humorous. In general though the film was really depressing. Its about a lonely 30 year old or so women who is in an unhappy marriage with a 30+ stoner and she works at a local store. A younger guy comes to work at the store and he ends up interesting her, and long story short they have an affair. This goes on for awhile, but eventually her guilty eats her up, and she tries to end it by poisoning him with some berries she buys from a fruit stand [which is like my least favourite scene, watching Jake eat potentially poisoness berries, and have no idea about it!] , because the berries are thought to have killed a friend from her work. So any way she feels guilty about that and takes them away from him. Blah blah, her husband finds out shes been cheating on him, meanwhile shes pregnant and the doctor told her husband his sperm count is too low to reproduce , but she lies and says its his baby. So then at the end, Jake's character gives her an option to stay with him, or to go back, and she decides to go back to her life, with her husband. Which just ends up in tragedy, and all the while her husband never figures out who she had an affair with, he beats up the wrong guy in the end of the movie. The movie wasn't bad, in fact i felt it was really good, but just too depressing, i left the movie theatre feeling SO depressed.
