Alright, I have a question about the selective coloring I think it is. I know people like Mon, Lauren, Daph, and Alexis are experts at this, but how do you do the cool coloring with the blue tinting and extremely red lips?

Oh! In Photoshop if you go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Selective Coloring you can toy around with the settings of all the colors and it'll create that effect. :D It's really the best feature to me. lol Selective Colorings makes everything vibrant and prettified.

As far as I know, the feature isn't in PSP but maybe I'm wrong? lol PS and PSP have a lot of different features. Sorry I'm of no help when it comes to PSP. :(

A week or so ago I found a tutorial that's supposed to do the same sort of thing but mine never turns out as good, but meh. Here it is, and it's on LJ so hopefully it's not a private post, or else you'll have to join the group.

I found a pretty useful tutorial for PSP here:

http://www.createblog.com/tutorials/tutorial.php?id=934

It helps turn dull images in better, more vivid images. Hope it helps. I have yet to try this out though.

Selective coloring isn't available in PSP, only in Photoshop, but I do have links to some tutorials that get the blue tinting/selective coloring effect you're looking for that works for PSP:

This might be the easiest thing, but everyones got that swirly effect on the sides of their banners, and I've tried it once and it looks like umm....shit. LOL. So I was wondering if someone could help me out?

And thanks to everyone who put up those awesome LJ links for the colorization. I'm gonna go on a spree today!

I`ve wanted to know about that too Anna.

I have a question that I guess is mostly for amanda. how do you get that crackly effect on your banners? Is it one of those pre-done layer type things *is having a memory blank on the tech term*

It's usually done with a texture laid out on top of the main image as another layer. The layer's opacity can be altered to make the right effect and so forth.

I get the swirl by duplicating the base image and going to Filter>Blur>Radial Blur and you just play around with the amount to your liking. :) You can also use the zoom from there which is a favorite of mine. Oh and then I take the eraser tool (the brush that is more..scattered? blurry? I dunno how to describe it lmao) and take away what you don't want like the person's face/body whatever. [PS]

And yeah, the cracks are a texture that you set on like Screen. lol

Okay, awesome. Thanks you hottie peoples!

It's basically similar in PSP also. Duplicate the layer, Adjust > Blur > Radial Blur. Alter the opacity so you can see the base image and erase the parts you don't want blurred. Then merge all the layers or go from there.

This is the texture that I think Amanda uses most of the time: Texture (http://i28.tinypic.com/ncdug1.jpg). I use it as well, a few others that are similar.

Yay! Thanks Nikki, Imma try that now. I've been trying so hard to get it right. Mucho appreciation. :D

I'm still a little confused ... I'm toying with the Selective Coloring in Photoshop and it's still not coming out the same. Are there tutorials for Photoshop ones too?

Hey all.

I woke up this morning and decided to waste some time trying to teach myself how to edit images. I'm a dork and I wanna learn how to create art for my PE characters. For starters, thought it would be fun to create a banner for one of my Buffy Boards RPG characters: Indra. Since meeting Spike has caused Indra to start to doubt Dru a little bit, I thought it might be fun to do a banner in which Indra is torn between Drusilla on the one hand and Spike on the other. My plan was to use this little project to teach myself how to use GIMP... but I lack the skills. lol.

Does anyone know where I can find a good GIMP tutorial? The help on the website is... just not working for me.

I want to do something pretty simple: I want to set one image as the background and place another image (an image of the person person) on top as a separate layer. That, I can do. The problem that I'm having is that I'm not sure how to crop negative space out of the top layer so that the background shows through. I thought I could set the lasso tool to the "Subtract from the Current Selection" option, but that just creates white space. I've scoured the internet, but I can't find a tutorial that makes sense to me.

EDIT 1: I figured it out!

EDIT 2: I figured out the thing above. Now, though, I have another question. Remember, I'm using GIMP, not Photoshop (because I'm cheap).

Before I went to bed last night, I worked on lighting. I'm having a bit of trouble. Does anyone have any tips? I want to play on the way that Indra perceives people as having colors -- the way she sees Spike as being "effulgent" and Dru as being dark. I think I managed the light thing with Spike decently well, but Indra now looks like I cut her out of a magazine and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get Dru into shadow.

Also, do you guys have any tips for how to make cool backgrounds or sort of blend the foreground into the background better? Mine look pretty bland. Below, I have the lighting effects in the original background, on an Indian-tapestry-inspired background, and on one that I made with the intention of looking like Dru's sewer lair.

Does anyone know how to use vector layers to create cool "kawaii" style graphics a la hello kitty and pucca?

If you don't know what I'm talking about you can go to kawaiinot.com or type in kawaii at deviantart.
