A Guide to Role Playing

Are you new to role-playing? Or do you need to be refreshed on how things go? Well then you have come to the right place. Due to the fact that Perfect Ending is mostly an RPG board, we have compiled a few guidelines together for everyone to follow and to hopefully help everything run a little more smoothly around here. So we ask that you please read over the following rules before you begin your role playing experience here at Perfect Ending.

General Posting Rules.
Always post in character and not as yourself.
Always write the name of you character in bold at the top of every post. [This rule only applies for RPGs under The Epics (http://www.perfect-ending.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9) forum and under The Plays (http://www.perfect-ending.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13) forum.]
Absolutely no one-liners. A one liner is not sufficient to truly get down what your character is feeling or their actions. Try to make your posts as detailed as you possibly can. No one is a mind reader and we cannot know what your character is really feeling, trying to say, or doing unless you put it all down. Don't be afraid of long and detailed posts. You will find that a lot of people find then preferable and want to read them.
Always wait for the next person to post and avoid double posting. If you need to exit your character from a scene just edit your previous post.
Godmodding, otherwise wise know as posting the actions or emotions for a character that is not yours, is strictly prohibited. You are required to WAIT for the other person to post. Do not post actions, feelings, or dialogue for another character that is not yours. Give the other person time to write their character's reactions they way they see fit. You wouldn't want anyone to do it to you, so don't do it to them.

For example do NOT do this:

Elena

"I'm pregnant." Elena announced to Mark, pleased at the look of shock and anger on his face. He had a right to be angry she acknowledged. They'd been dating for months now but they had not consummated the relationship. "Don't give me that look. You can't possibly have really expected me to remain faithful." Elena flinched slightly as Mark raised his hand like he was going to slap her.

The person who played Mark might not have wanted his anger to show (if he even felt it) and describing his actions in particular is a sure fire way to get other rpers angry with you. Let people decide their own actions and emotions. That is the whole point. Instead, you mihgt do something like this.

Elena
"I'm pregnant." Elena announced to Mark, watching his face carefully, hoping for a shocked and angry response. He'd have a right to be angry They'd been dating for months now but they had not consummated the relationship. " You can't possibly have really expected me to remain faithful."

This way, the reaction is only guessed at and the other player has the ability to do what they would like with the character in response. Fighting scenes might be trickier, but the general rule should be that your character can throw a punch and even connect (though not if you want to leave it really open) and the other person can decide how badly the character is hurt, if the punch misses, etc. Generally just be fair to your fellow rpers. Remember no one is invincible and it will get exceedingly boring if you try to make your character so.

If you are going to be away for a period of time and your character will be needed, please contact the RPG manager so that proper procedures can be taken to have the character temporarily played by someone else and/or post in the proper away threads. [Only in Board and Member Run RPGs]

How to Post.

Posting out of character:
-- OOC: Out of Character; Question, comment.
-- BIC: Back in Character; Continue posting in character.
Note: Since all games will have an OOC Thread, please try and post all of your OOCs in those specified threads. Unless it is absolutely necessary to post it in the playing thread.

Always post in third person as if you are writing a book.
When you need to post dialog, always include it within quotations .
All thoughts should be in italics.
On Perfect Ending, we ask that you please use prose format.

All posts must be in PAST tense.

OOC: This is the [i]proper way to post utilizing all of the aforementioned rules. BIC.

Adair

Adair strolled down the street, pausing every now and then when something in a store window caught her eye. Inevitably, most of the stores she stopped in front of were clothes shops.

I wish I could afford a little shopping spree.

Sighing wistfully, Adair hurried on and turned the corner before the temptation could prove too much for her. As she looked down the street, her eyes widened slightly in shock as she saw a familiar figure heading her way. Her pace quickened as she walked over to meet him.

"Ryan, what are you doing back in town?!" She questioned with a slightly accuasatory tone. After all why should she be friendly after the way things were left.

He looks really good. She thought somewhat bitterly. It was so unfair.

When a playing thread reached 200 posts, please make a new playing thread as those will be closed by a moderator.

Alright, now with all that out of the way, we hope you have fun role-playing. And if any of your questions have not been answered in this thread, don't hesitate to contact one of the moderators or administrators for further help.
